A loud noise and a face in the window will make anyone jump. It is much harder to make someone afraid of an empty corridor, or a sound they cannot place, or a question the story refuses to answer.

These horror games lean on atmosphere, tension and ideas rather than cheap tricks. They may not make you scream, but they are hard to shake.

1. Silent Hill 2

James Sunderland receives a letter from his late wife asking him to meet her in the town of Silent Hill. What he finds there is shaped by grief, guilt and fog.

It is the gold standard for psychological horror, whether you play the original or the remake.

Play it if: you want horror that is really about something.

2. SOMA

An underwater research station at the bottom of the ocean, mostly abandoned, mostly broken. The machines there seem to believe they are people.

SOMA’s monsters are frightening, but its real horror is philosophical. It raises questions about consciousness and identity that linger for days.

Play it if: you love sci-fi that makes you think.

3. Alien: Isolation

Amanda Ripley is trapped on a failing space station with a single alien that hunts by sound and learns from your habits. You cannot kill it. You can only hide.

The tension comes from the stalking, not sudden shocks, and every glance at the motion tracker is agony.

Play it if: you want sustained, heart-pounding tension.

4. Signalis

An android searches for a lost companion through a bleak, dreamlike facility. It plays like a classic survival horror game, with limited inventory, scarce ammo and locked doors.

Its story is cryptic, haunting and beautifully presented in a striking low-poly style.

Play it if: you miss old-school survival horror.

5. Darkwood

A top-down survival horror game set in a forest that is wrong in ways that are hard to describe. Scavenge by day, then barricade yourself in and listen to whatever is outside at night.

The nights are some of the most frightening experiences in games, and almost all of it happens through sound.

Play it if: you want fear built from sound and imagination.

6. Dredge

You captain a small fishing boat around a quiet archipelago, catching fish to sell. Some of the fish you pull up are not quite right, and you really should be back in port before dark.

It is a relaxing fishing game wrapped around a creeping cosmic mystery, and the mix works brilliantly.

Play it if: you want horror that starts cozy.

7. Iron Lung

You are sealed inside a tiny submarine in an ocean of blood on a desolate moon, with no window, navigating only by coordinates and a camera that takes grainy photos.

It is short, simple and terrifying because of what you cannot see.

Play it if: you want a short, intense experience.

8. Little Nightmares

Six, a small girl in a yellow raincoat, tries to escape a vessel full of grotesque, enormous adults. You sneak, climb and hide in a world built to the wrong scale.

It is unsettling rather than shocking, with images that feel like half-remembered childhood nightmares.

Play it if: you like dark fairy tales.

9. Pathologic 2

A surgeon returns to his hometown on the steppe as a deadly plague breaks out, and he has only days to stop it. Hunger, exhaustion and impossible choices wear you down.

It is demanding and often uncomfortable on purpose. Few games make survival feel this desperate.

Play it if: you want something unlike anything else.

10. Observation

You play the artificial intelligence of a space station, helping the one remaining crew member work out what went wrong. You see the station only through cameras and systems.

The unusual point of view makes every flicker on a screen feel ominous.

Play it if: you love slow-burn sci-fi mysteries.
