Grand Theft Auto VI (PS5)

PS5

An Xbox Series S. Big W and Target both sell the 512GB Series S for $699, and Big W and JB Hi-Fi sell the boxed game for $125. That’s $824 to be playing Grand Theft Auto VI when it launches on Thursday 19 November, the cheapest new setup we found.

If you’d rather be on PlayStation, Big W’s PS5 Digital Edition bundle is the cheapest way in, at $874 with the game. Here’s every option, cheapest first, plus a few things that can save you money.

Every option, cheapest first

Setup Console Game Total
Xbox Series S 512GB $699 (Big W, Target) $125 boxed $824
PS5 Digital Edition, Fortnite Flowering Chaos bundle $749 (Big W) $125 boxed $874
Xbox Series S 1TB $849 (Big W) $125 boxed $974
PS5 Digital Edition $889 (Target) $125 boxed $1,014
PS5 with disc drive $949 (Target) $125 boxed $1,074
Xbox Series X 1TB Digital Edition $999 (Big W) $125 boxed $1,124

The game price is the boxed Standard Edition at Big W or JB Hi-Fi. Buying it digitally from the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store costs A$129.95, $4.95 more.

Big W’s PS5 bundle is a PS5 Digital Edition with eight Fortnite items and 1,000 V-Bucks. It’s $140 less than Target’s standalone PS5 Digital Edition.

Don’t pay for a disc drive

Rockstar Support says boxed copies of GTA VI contain a download code rather than a disc, and JB Hi-Fi’s listing says the same: “No Disc Included (Code in Box)”. A disc drive does nothing for GTA 6, so a Digital Edition PS5 or an Xbox Series S plays the boxed copy just as well as a console with a disc drive.

Boxed or digital?

  • Price: the boxed copy is $125 at Big W and JB Hi-Fi, against A$129.95 on the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store. Big W and JB Hi-Fi both have a pre-order price guarantee: if the price drops by release day, they refund the difference (Big W’s applies when you pay upfront).
  • Pre-order bonus: Rockstar says the Vintage Vice City Pack and a month of GTA+ come with digital pre-orders and purchases made before 20 November. Rockstar lists the Vintage Vice City Pack for physical pre-orders too, but not the GTA+ month. JB Hi-Fi’s listing says its pack offer ends 18 November.
  • Pre-loading: digital pre-orders can start pre-loading from Tuesday 10 November (local midnight on PS5, and 11am in Sydney on Xbox), according to Rockstar Support and Sony. Boxed codes can be redeemed from 12 November to pre-load. Our pre-load guide has the details.

You don’t need a subscription

The Microsoft Store listing says “Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience”, so you don’t need PS Plus or Game Pass to play it. That keeps the totals above the full cost of getting started.

Watch the storage on a Series S

The 512GB Series S has the smallest drive of any option here. Sony says a PS5 needs a minimum of 212GB free for GTA 6, and we haven’t found an official Xbox figure yet. Our pre-load guide will add one when there is. If you want room for other big games too, the 1TB Series S ($849 at Big W) is $150 more and still keeps the total under $1,000.

What about PC or Switch 2?

GTA 6 is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. It hasn’t been announced for PC or Nintendo Switch 2. Our GTA 6 PC page looks at what Rockstar’s history suggests about a PC version.

The short answer

For the least money, get an Xbox Series S and a boxed copy for $824. On PlayStation, Big W’s PS5 Digital Edition bundle with a boxed copy is $874. Either way, skip the disc drive: GTA 6 doesn’t come on a disc. Our GTA 6 price guide has every edition, and the release time guide says when it unlocks where you live.
